Figs Stuffed with Walnuts in Syrup

An Albanian dessert: tender stewed figs with walnuts covered in a thick fig syrup. Simple and elegant.

  1. Trim the tough stems and halve the figs lengthwise.
  2. Arrange the figs cut-side up in a small skillet and pour water around the fruit.
  3. Cook over medium heat until the figs are tender, about 10–15 minutes. Transfer to a serving dish.
  4. To the reddish juice remaining in the skillet, add sugar and, stirring constantly over medium heat for a couple of minutes, reduce until you have a thick syrup. Remove from heat.
  5. Place a walnut half in each fig and drizzle with syrup. Serve warm or chilled.
