Arepa

Arepa

Latin American cornmeal flatbreads—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Served as bread or filled with various toppings.

Instructions

  1. Pour the cornmeal into a bowl and gradually add the salted warm water, kneading until a dough forms. Let it rest for 5 minutes.
  2. Shape into round flatbreads approximately 8 cm in diameter and 1.5 cm thick. Fry on a lightly oiled skillet over low heat until golden on both sides.
  3. Transfer the flatbreads to a baking dish and bake at 175°C for about 20 minutes—the arepas are done when they sound hollow when tapped.
  4. Tip: for a richer flavor, prepare the dough using chicken or beef broth instead of water.
